Presenting yourself – personal ‘brand’ and social media.
Our task for this session was to take a look at what content is associated with our name online. As an individual that has tried to keep out of the social media and personal ‘brand’ game during my professional career, I thought this would be a quick and easy task.
I tried various search engines – Google, Bing, and socialmention, and was quite happy with the results. Only two entries related to me, LinkedIn and Facebook, both of which require an account and, in the case of Facebook, you need to be my friend to access any information. I also tried an image search and the results were hilarious! Somehow I look exactly like Hillary Clinton as well as a man with a full beard!
As for the other social media possibilities – twitter, instagram, pininterest and so forth, as some of my fellow Surrey bloggers have mentioned, I don’t think I have the time and effort that is required to maintain a specific ‘image’ and keep up with the daily chatter and noise. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of these mediums is ‘big butts’ for fame and ‘outrageous stunts’ for cash. Neither of which I am particularily interested in, nor might encounter during a research career.
On the other hand, reading through the possible uses for these mediums such as – News updates, job opportunities, publicising your work and professional activities all seem reasonable. However, I think I missed the part of WHO is really interested in reading about my life anyways?
We are interested Ancient learner. I find it fascinating to find out about all the different research that is going on at Surrey and I am sure there are others too!
